Andy Birkholz

Buoy Technician & Facilities Manager

508-228-9198

Hailing from Colorado, Andy came to Nantucket several years ago for a position in the wine industry his favorite area of study in the natural sciences. After attending a Gala at the Maria Mitchell Association, he became increasingly interested in the association's impact on the island and its commitment to science, education, and community engagement.

Joining the team in 2025 as the resident handy man, Andy is a MMA Swiss Army Knife; he can be seen fixing observatory domes, cleaning ponds, restoring old furniture, painting buildings, tending bar, wrangling hay bales, and even dressing up as Santa! This year Andy joined the Marine Science Team as buoy technician, helping to ensure the Harbor Monitoring Project continues to deliver reliable, consistent data through careful maintenance of the monitoring buoy.

Some of his favorite things about the Maria Mitchell Association and its properties are the Astronomer's Study (historical telescopes and cozy lounge vibes), the topographical map in the Hinchman House Natural Science Museum (showing both terrestrial and seabed elevations) and the Stargazer Stout at Cisco Brewers (a collaboration Maria Mitchell would have loved)!

Look for Andy out in the harbor and give him a wave the next time you’re on the ferry.
