Discovery Playground

The Discovery Playground is an inclusive, STEAM- based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), outdoor play, fitness, and gathering space for all ages.

The Discovery Playground at Hinsdale Park, created by the Nantucket Land Bank in collaboration with the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association, opened September 1, 2019.

The playground is located at 54 Old South Road on Nantucket Land Bank property across the street from the State Forest.  As a Land Bank property, the Discovery Playground at Hinsdale Park will be open daily from sunrise to sunset.

This fully accessible playground includes a Netplex Structure, Sensory Wall, Cozy Dome, Global Motion and HealthBeat Fitness Equipment, as well as a 66 foot long Zip-Krooz with both pendulum seats and inclusive seats, a ramped structure, and a collection of musical instruments. All of the equipment and outdoor furnishings at the Discovery Playground are accessible or allow for wheelchair transfer. The usage of “Poured-in-Place” ground covering enables the accessibility and ease of movement. Much of the playground has a “high play value”, meaning that numerous children can play at the same time on multiple components and can do so in an inclusive environment for all abilities.

Everyday Science signs are placed throughout the playground to help children and parents understand and think critically about the science behind the equipment and activities.

The Discovery Playground was very generously funded by the Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Community Health Initiative, the Town of Nantucket/Community Preservation Act, and the Land Bank Commission.

Community advisors included: Nantucket S.T.A.R, Nantucket Community School, the Town of Nantucket Planning Board, Small Friends on Nantucket, Town of Nantucket Parks and Recreation Committee, Nantucket Public Schools, and the Institute for Community Inclusion at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Come have fun at the Discovery Playground today!
