Jónelle first came to Nantucket in 2013 and immediately fell in love with the science sandbox that is this island in addition to the natural open spaces, trails and beaches that are our backyards! She worked at the Offshore Animal Hospital for two years before transitioning to teaching both Mathematics and Science and Nantucket High School for six years. She is enthusiastic and committed to further expand our year-round programming and outreach here at the MMA.

Jónelle studied General Chemistry with a focus in Analytical Chemistry and performed undergraduate special project research in Environmental and Organic Chemistry while minoring in International Business and Psychology at American International College, in Springfield MA. This allowed her to investigate the effects of Polychlorinated Biphenyl compounds on aquatic systems while designing a natural remediation technique that had less harsh implications on aquatic environments while learning about the cultural implications and mandates of doing business in different parts of the world. She later went on to pursue a Master's in Education, curriculum, and instruction through Fitchburg State College.

Jónelle is passionate about reading, yoga, gardening, and spending time with her husband and two dogs. Her hope is to connect the MMA not just to off island Science and History partners but to also bridge the school systems as well as the community with our local private organizations to increase the impacts of science and natural history outreach to our local community as she is passionate about kindling the love for science in all people.

Jónelle does not yet have a favorite specimen on campus, but she surely looks forward to continuing to walk through Nantucket’s history via our collections which tell us a unique story of how Nantucket has shifted and evolved over the last few hundred years.
