Island Explorers Camp (Available for Nantucket Year-Round Residents Only) Register

Join us for a special week of camp for year-round residents of Nantucket.  You will explore coastal and upland habitats in search of critters, play games, listen to stories, make crafts, and so much more!

All new Afterschool Camp this year!! Still in school and can’t make it to our discounted day camp? Join us in the afternoon instead! We will explore the island’s upland habitats and the fascinating creatures we find there! Afterschool programs will run from 2:45pm – 5pm each day.

Amazing Adaptations Register

Why do turtles have shells? Why do bats come out at night? Investigate your favorite animal species and how they evolved during this week of adaptation adventures. We will collect plants and animals using nets, insect aspirators, and more. Examine the obvious and not-so-obvious adaptations that help these living organisms survive using microscopes, magnifying lenses, and other scientific investigation tools. Put your knowledge and own adaptations to the test playing games, engineering designs, and solving mysteries. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Exploring Art in Ecosystems Register

Come and join us as we investigate Nantucket’s ecosystems and the interdependence of plants and animals through nature inspired art projects. This class fuses our love of science and outdoor adventure with artistic expression. We will incorporate our daily explorations, investigations, and observations with art projects such as painting, sculpture, collage, paper machê, and more. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Lore of the Land Register

What are your favorite stories? What did you learn from them? This week, take a journey into your imagination with myths, folktales, and fairy tales inspired by the natural world. As we explore the diverse habitats of Nantucket in search of plants and animals, we will share the fascinating tales about these species through games, crafts, spoken word and more. We’ll even get a chance to create our own stories and share them with the group! Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Underwater Explorations Register

What better way to experience Nantucket than underwater? Nantucket is known for its ocean, harbor, beach, and dune ecosystems! We’ll explore these aquatic and coastal systems, and the animals that live there, through such activities as seining, fishing, and beachcombing. Two snorkeling trips and a visit to the MMA’s Aquarium are also included in this week of wet, watery fun! Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Trash to Treasure (NEW!) Register

Come on an upcycling adventure with the MMA and learn how to transform our trash into useful and creative objects! We’ll explore a variety of the island’s diverse habitats and learn about the important resources they provide for all living things. Through games and art projects, we will discover ways to protect these important habitats, reduce the resources we use, and repurpose old clothes, household materials, and litter into cool products. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

ACKtastic Sharks Register

Be amazed as you discover the fascinating diversity of sharks, their unique senses, and why they are so important to the world’s oceans. You will observe a shark dissection and experience firsthand how researchers are able to track sharks with transmitters. This week will also include daily visits to north shore beaches, seining, a snorkeling adventure, and a visit to the MMA’s aquarium. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Please note: Participants must demonstrate strong swimming ability to participate in snorkeling activities.

Beach BioBlitz Register

Become a citizen scientist for a week as we explore the fascinating diversity of plants and animals that survive in Nantucket’s salty waters and wetlands. Through games, collection activities, visual aids, and exploration, we will investigate the plants and animals we find in order to understand the adaptations that enable them to survive in challenging environments. During visits to north shore beaches and harbors, we will search for species by seining, snorkeling, fishing, and, for the first time in MMA history, swimming! Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Please note: Participants must demonstrate strong swimming ability to participate in snorkeling and swimming activities.

Ecosystem Engineers Register

We will investigate Nantucket’s diverse habitats in search of plants and animals that fill the role of ecosystem engineers. These organisms use the resources around them along with their own adaptations to create, modify, maintain, or destroy habitats. Learn how humans replicate the efforts of nature’s engineers in our own buildings, gardens, and technologies through games, design and construction challenges, and robot building.  Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

Wild Survival Register

Do you think you could survive if you were alone in the wilderness? Come learn survival techniques such as how to read a map and use a compass, make rope from native reeds, forage for edible plants, and build a shelter out of nothing but what you can find in the habitat around you. In addition, we will learn the basics of tracking deer, mice, birds, and insects as we find them and study their behaviors. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.
