The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association offers a variety of summer internships at its Aquarium, Science Museum, Environmental Education Program, and Observatories. Qualified undergraduate and graduate students usually study in the fields of marine biology, natural science, education, historic preservation, and astronomy. We also offer some opportunities for high school students. Please read all of the descriptions to find the internship that fits you best.

Designed for hunting, the barn owl has one ear located higher than other to help it better locate its prey on the ground. The distinctive facial disc acts like a radar dish channeling the sounds into its ears.
Moon Snail
This predatory marine mollusk is a rare sight on Nantucket. During the day, they can be found buried in the sand, but at night they emerge to hunt for scallops, oysters, mussels, and slipper shells. They are most noted for their smooth shells that often end up as the homes for larger hermit crabs. Their egg cases are, also, commonly found by beachcombers and snorkelers camouflaged in the sand near eelgrass habitats. This egg case gets its name, sand collar, because of its shape – just like that of a shirt collar.
