Open Nights at Loines Observatory

Join our professional astronomers for an impressive tour of the starry sky and for telescopic viewing of the Moon, planets, nebulae, galaxies, and more.
Programs take place at 59 Milk Street Extension and are weather permitting. Please call the Observatory at 774-325-1081 if you are concerned about the weather.

Afterschool Programs

ARTstronomy Register

Art and science collide in an afternoon of fun for young children. We will celebrate the 200th birthday of Maria Mitchell, America’s first professional female astronomer, while creating cosmic works of art using various media. Art projects include 3-D stars, galaxy jewelry, sun catchers and more. Appropriate for ages 5-8 years. This program is offered through the Nantucket Community School. The registration link will take you to their site.

Spring Discovery Camp

Home ECOnomics Register

During this action-packed week of exploration and innovation, we will inspect the world of plants and animals and discover what we can make from nature to use in our own homes. Learn how some animals build homes, make and store food, and even decorate! Let the outdoor world inspire you as we make all natural cleaners and lotions, plant dyed t-shirts, natural home decorations, sweet berry snacks, and more.

Winter/Spring Owl Prowls Register

Join the MMA’s Field Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews, on an exciting night-birding experience – the Owl Prowl. After visiting our demonstration Barn Owl nest box, you will visit sites known for owls, play recordings of their calls and wait for a response or sighting. Limited transportation is provided from 4 Vestal St. This program is meant for adults but children 8 and up are welcome to register with an adult guardian. This program will be cancelled and refunded in the case of rain.

Early-bird Bird Walks Register

Join the MMA’s Field Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews, on a boutique birding experience. Birds are an important part of Nantucket’s ecosystem and the island is known as an excellent birding spot. After a brief visit to the Museum’s ornithology collection, you will head out to some of the best birding areas on the island and around town. The trips will visit birding areas around Nantucket and have very limited space (transportation provided).Data will be collected during these trips for long term research.

A limited number of excellent binoculars are available for loan.

Droppings of Love Register

Is your Valentine stinkin’ cute? Do you love the crap out of them? Would you give turds to the nature nerd in your life? If you answered yes, then join us for a Sunday afternoon of creative cooking for the loved ones in your life. We will make a variety of chocolate treats that resemble scat of Nantucket animals including rabbits, deer, geese, turtles and more. Afterwards, decorate your own gift box and add animal info cards on each species. This program is geared towards adults, but children ages 8 and up are welcome to attend with an adult. Space is limited.
