Loines Observatory Stargazing Contact Us

A guided tour of the night sky by a professional astronomer, suitable for all ages. Learn about the constellations, interesting objects  in the sky, and observe the moon, planets, stars and galaxies with the Maria Mitchell  Observatory’s two large telescopes. Rain dates will be scheduled to ensure a visit during good stargazing conditions.

ARTstronomy Contact Us

Art and science collide in a morning or afternoon of fun for K-6 students. Students are introduced to the wonders of the universe and their place in it through age-appropriate pictures and stories. They then create their own cosmic works of art, learning some basic astronomy in the process and developing a personal connection with the universe. We’ll come to your classroom, or you can bring students to us.

Catch a Star Contact Us

Learn how to photograph the starry skies with our knowledgeable staff and then take your own photos of planets, stars and galaxies. You can attach your personal camera or smartphone to our powerful 24-inch telescope, or use our camera.  Suitable for teen and adult learners. Rain dates scheduled to ensure a good night for photographing the stars.

Guided Nature Walk Contact Us

Let us lead a nature walk tailored to your group’s interest and age level.  Topics include geology, plant, bird, insect, and animal identification, herbal and medicinal plants and ecological concepts.  This program is ideal for groups that can find their own way to one of several nearby nature trails, whether by walking, biking, or vehicle.  Contact us for possibilities.

Marine Ecology and Biodiversity Contact Us

Nantucket’s diverse harbor life is an excellent introduction or study topic for learning about biodiversity, marine biology, and taxonomy.  Meet MMA staff at a local harbor beach to catch and identify fish and invertebrates with a seine net, learn about the harbor ecosystem, and become expert beach combers.

Daring Daughters of Nantucket Contact Us

A walking tour concerning the lives of Maria Mitchell and Nantucket’s famous and infamous women, as well as the lesser known women of our island.  Learn why whaling, Quakerism, and the isolation of an island afforded these women opportunities that women elsewhere in America at the time were not afforded.

Mystery History Ghost Tour COntact Us

Take a walk through the streets of Town as we hunt for different and unusual architectural features.  We will create sketches of our finds and hear some spooky stories of the ghosts who haunt these homes and others.

Museum Tours

Vestal Street Observatory Tour Contact Us

A private guided tour of the Vestal Street Observatory, suitable for all ages. Learn about Nantucket native Maria Mitchell, the first woman astronomer in the United States.  See a scale model of the solar system to learn about the enormity of space.  If skies are clear look at sunspots and enormous eruptions on the Sun through our special solar telescope. The visit ends with students making their own edible comets.

Historic Mitchell House Tour Contact Us

Take a walk back in time with a guided and in-depth tour of Maria Mitchell’s birthplace and the home to the clan of 12 Mitchells.  Students will learn about life in the early to mid-19th century and the famous astronomical and scientific family as well as about Nantucket history, Quakerism, and the place of women in this island community.

Natural Science Museum Tour Contact Us

Learn about the animals, plants, birds, and insects that make Nantucket unique on this guided tour through museum exhibits and live animal displays.  Students have the opportunity to touch live snakes and turtles as well as investigate our collection of bones, feathers, and other interesting nature items.

Natural History Collections Tour Contact Us

See the behind the scenes work of a biological collection and learn how to work with valuable scientific specimens.  The MMA collection consists of over 900 bird specimens, 5,000 pressed plants, over 8,000 invertebrates, and numerous miscellaneous items from bones to eggs. The tour can be focused on a specific topic and each group is given the option of collecting and summarizing data from specimens to practice scientific skills.
