Fall Open Nights at Loines Observatory

Join our professional astronomers for an impressive tour of the starry sky and for telescopic viewing of the Moon, planets, nebulae, galaxies, and more.

Programs take place at 59 Milk Street Extension and are weather permitting. No pre-registration necessary. Please call the Observatory at 508-257-1117 if you are concerned about the weather.

4th Annual Falconry: On the Hunt Register

MMA teams up with Nantucket Hawking and Falconry for an afternoon all about raptors. This program will begin at the Maria Mitchell Association’s Natural Science Museum for an indoor presentation by Kim Botelho on Nantucket’s birds of prey. Afterwards, we will head out to meet Licensed Master Falconer, Tom Mulholland in the field. You will have the opportunity to see hawks and falcons from MMA’s collections, get up-close to a live red-tailed hawk, hear about Tom’s experiences working with raptors, and then observe the hunt first hand. Appropriate for ages 8 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must register. MMA can provide transportation to the field location for first 10 people that request it. Others are welcome to follow us there. A max of 20 participants will be allowed.

Afterschool Programs

Art Forms and Animal Encounters Register

Join the Maria Mitchell Association and learn about a new animal and art form each week. We will sculpt snake coil jars with clay, modge podge insect masks, paint turtles with water colors, explore gyotaku techniques (Japanese Fish prints) with acrylic paints on rice paper, make mammal mosaics, and build mobiles with owl origami. Live animal visits will be included some weeks.

Afterschool Discovery Series Register

Don’t let the chilly weather stop you from exploring the outdoors! Join MMA for this five week afterschool adventure series around Nantucket. We will pick your child up directly from school before we head out to explore different habitats around Nantucket. We will return to the Nantucket Elementary School for parent pick-up at 5:00 p.m.

11/2 – Harbor Flats: Seining and hand net collections then head to the museum to make metallic scaled fish windsocks. Be sure to wear water boots and bring a change of clothes in case you get wet.
11/9 – Sankaty cliffs and Sesachacha Pond: In search of artifacts and fossils then head to the museum to dig out your own fossil to take home
11/16 – Windswept Cranberry Bog: Let’s get moving and complete the pond loop trail. We will enjoy cranberry cider and snacks and play nocturnal animal games along the way. Don’t forget to wear good shoes for hiking.
11/30 – Norwood Farm: Learn how to Letterbox during this scavenger hunt through the Moors. You will solve clues from nature to find a secret treasure. Don’t forget to wear good shoes for hiking.
12/7 – State Forest: Learn to use a compass then challenge your success during a game of Compass Frisbee Golf. Afterwards, you will make your own compass in the museum.

A max of 10 children will be allowed so register soon!

Winter Discovery Camp

Ecosystem Engineers in ACKtion Register

Ecosystem engineers are organisms that use the resources around them along with their own adaptations to create, modify, maintain or destroy habitats. During three days of habitat exploration and indoor hands-on activities, we will investigate Nantucket’s inhabitants that fill these roles and learn how humans replicate their efforts in our own buildings and technologies. Participants will design and test a room-sized marble maze, build an animal inspired robot to take home, complete engineering for survival mystery challenges and more.

Wednesday – Intro to Animal Engineers: Tunnels, towers, and mazes

Fall Owl Prowls Register

Join the MMA’s Field Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews, on an exciting night-birding experience – the Owl Prowl. After visiting our demonstration Barn Owl nest box, you will visit sites known for owls, play recordings of their calls and wait for a response or sighting. Limited transportation is provided from 4 Vestal St. Call the office to request transportation if it is needed. This program is meant for adults but children 8 and up are welcome to register with an adult guardian. This program will be cancelled and refunded in the case of rain.

Early-bird Bird Expeditions Register

Join the MMA’s Field Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews, on a boutique birding experience. Birds are an important part of Nantucket’s ecosystem and the island is known as an excellent birding spot. After a brief visit to the Museum’s ornithology collection, you will head out to some of the best birding areas on the island and around town. The trips will visit birding areas around Nantucket and have very limited space (transportation provided). Walking trips (summer only) involve a stroll through town to find shore birds and backyard birds. Data will be collected during these trips for long term research.

A limited number of excellent binoculars are available for loan.
