Family Programs

Open Nights at Loines Observatory

Join our professional astronomers for an impressive tour of the starry sky and for telescopic viewing of the Moon, planets, nebulae, galaxies, and more.
Programs take place at 59 Milk Street Extension and are weather permitting. Please call the Observatory at 774-325-1081 if you are concerned about the weather.
No pre-registration required.

Very Hungry Vertebrates Registration Closed

Ever wonder how we care for our museum animals and tropical fish when the sites are closed? Come see our overwintering animals get fed and learn about their feeding ecology and how the seasons affect them in our newest feeding program.

At least one adult must register with children. This program is designed to be interesting for all ages!

Family Nature Outing - Halloween Hike No Registration Required

Join the MMA on Saturday, October 26th for a Halloween themed Family Nature Outing! We will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Nantucket State Forest. Together we will explore the spooky side of nature, searching for bugs and spiders under logs, pretending to be witches with homemade broomsticks, and listening for the spookiest sound as we walk through the woods. Families are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy after the program as we celebrate the beauty of fall with a picnic in the woods!

Directions: Drive on Old South Rd. towards the Airport, turn right onto Lover’s Lane, parking lot will be on the right. Accessible by the WAVE either on the Airport route or the Sconset via Old South Road route: get off at the Lover’s Lane stop and walk down Lover’s Lane until you reach the parking lot on your right.

Tales for Tots Register

Join the MMA as we read and discover together in Tales for Tots, our new program designed especially for the young explorer in your family! Each session we will read a classic nature or science related book, then make a craft or play games related to the story. (Sessions held on the same week will feature the same story and activities).

Afterwards, you are welcome to explore the MMA’s Natural History Museum free of charge. This program caters towards children aged 3-5, and children must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. We will meet at 10:30 am in the MMA Natural Science Museum on 7 Milk Street.

Afterschool Programs

Animal Adaptations Register

Join the Maria Mitchell Association for a 6-week afterschool program that explores the animals of Nantucket. We will investigate five native animals and discover the traits and behaviors that help them survive on our island. Come prepared for games, crafts, stories, and even an animal visitor or two!

Spooky Science Register

Join the Maria Mitchell Association for four weeks of Halloween science fun!  You will fly ghost rockets, design your own a Franken-doodle-bot, build a conductive playdough monster with glowing eyes, make slime, and more!

Winter Discovery Programs

Night at the Museum Register

Join MMA for our first overnight program at the museum!! Children arrive at 5pm in time for some food-science dinner fun, followed by games, engineering challenges, a movie, and more! In the morning, the fun will continue as we explore the museum until pick up at 11:30. Children should bring a sleeping bag, sleeping pad (optional), pillow, toothbrush/toothpaste, snacks/food if they are prone to food allergies.  They should also be prepared for both indoor and outdoor play.

Appropriate for ages 6-12

Space is very limited with a max of 8 children allowed

Winter Discovery Camp Register

Join the MMA this winter break as we explore animal extremes in the natural world! Come discover how bio luminescence lights up the deepest parts of the oceans, how Artic terns survive the longest migration in the skies, how the largest (and smallest) critters in the world live, and so much more. We will investigate these exceptional animals through a variety of hands on activities including experiments, engineering challenges, crafts, games, and – weather permitting – field trips to different habitats around Nantucket.

Fall/Winter Owl Prowls Register

Join the MMA’s Field Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews, on an exciting night-birding experience – the Owl Prowl. After visiting our demonstration Barn Owl nest box, you will visit sites known for owls, play recordings of their calls and wait for a response or sighting. Limited transportation is available from 4 Vestal St. This program is meant for adults but children 8 and up are welcome to register with an adult guardian. This program will be cancelled and refunded in the case of rain. If the program is fully booked and you have a vehicle please call the office 508-228-9198 and we may be able to accommodate you.

Early-bird Bird Walks - Private Program Call the Office

Join the MMA’s Field Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews, on a boutique birding experience. Birds are an important part of Nantucket’s ecosystem and the island is known as an excellent birding spot. You will head out to some of the best birding areas on the island and around town.  The trips will visit birding areas around Nantucket and have very limited space (transportation provided).Data will be collected during these trips for long term research.

A limited number of excellent binoculars are available for loan.
